Google's AI clothing try-on tool now only requires a selfie

Google Updates AI Try-On Feature to Work With Just a Selfie

Google has announced a major upgrade to its AI-powered virtual try-on feature, allowing users to try on clothes using only a selfie. Previously, shoppers had to upload a full-body photo, but now Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model — nicknamed Nano Banana — can generate a full-body digital version of the user from a simple selfie.

How the Updated Feature Works

Users can upload a selfie and select their usual clothing size. The feature then generates several full-body try-on images, from which users can choose one to set as their default. If preferred, they can still upload a full-body photo or choose from pre-existing virtual models of various body types.

The updated feature arrives today in the United States.

Expansion of Google’s Virtual Try-On

Google originally launched its AI try-on tool in July, enabling users to preview how apparel items from its Shopping Graph would look on them across Google Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images.

To use it, shoppers simply tap on an apparel product listing and select the "try it on" icon.

Doppl App Also Receives New Features

Alongside improving its main try-on system, Google has also been expanding Doppl, its standalone virtual try-on app. Earlier this week, Doppl added a shoppable discovery feed, offering:

  • AI-generated videos of real products

  • Outfit recommendations based on personal style

  • Direct links to buy nearly every item in the feed

While some users may find AI-generated feeds unfamiliar, Google sees the format as an opportunity to showcase clothing in a TikTok- and Instagram-style experience that users already understand.

A Step Forward in AI Shopping

With this update, Google is doubling down on AI-driven shopping experiences, making it easier for people to visualize outfits quickly and accurately — all from a single selfie.
