China's Moonshot AI raises $2 billion at a $20 billion valuation, as demand for open source AI skyrockets
Moonshot AI has raised approximately $2 billion in a fresh funding round, pushing the Beijing-based company’s valuation to around $20 billion. The investment highlights growing global interest in affordable open-source AI models developed by Chinese companies, even as they compete against better-funded Western rivals.
The funding round was led by Meituan’s venture capital arm, Long-Z Investment, with participation from China Mobile, Tsinghua Capital, and CPE Yuanfeng. According to financial advisor Huafeng Capital, Moonshot AI has now raised nearly $3.9 billion over the past six months, marking one of the largest funding surges in China’s AI sector.
Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former researcher at Meta AI and Google Brain, Moonshot quickly gained attention after launching its open-weight Kimi series of large language models. The company’s models became especially popular among developers and coding communities because they offer strong performance at lower operating costs compared with many Western AI systems.
Its earlier model, Kimi K2.5, attracted major attention this year after achieving benchmark results close to top models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Moonshot’s latest release, Kimi K2.6, is now among the most widely used AI models on developer platform OpenRouter, showing the rapid rise of Chinese AI technologies in global markets.
The company’s business growth has also accelerated significantly. According to Huafeng Capital, Moonshot’s annual recurring revenue crossed $200 million in April, fueled by rising paid subscriptions and growing API usage from businesses and developers integrating its models into their applications.
The fundraising reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where investors are increasingly backing Chinese AI labs focused on open-source and low-cost inference models. While many Chinese companies may not match the financial resources of U.S. firms, their models are becoming attractive alternatives for users seeking lower operating costs and flexible deployment options.
Competition in China’s AI sector is intensifying rapidly. Rivals including DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Zhipu AI are also seeing strong investor demand and rising market valuations. DeepSeek is reportedly seeking outside investment at a valuation of around $45 billion, while Zhipu AI and MiniMax have experienced strong stock market rallies following new model launches.
Moonshot competes directly with leading global AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, while also battling Chinese rivals like Alibaba’s Qwen and ByteDance’s Doubao.
The rapid growth of Moonshot AI signals that China’s AI ecosystem is becoming increasingly competitive on the global stage, particularly in open-source AI development where affordability and accessibility are driving adoption.
