OpenAI purchases the tech talk show TBPN: WSJ
ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has acquired online talk show TBPN, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, although the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. The move is aimed at encouraging more constructive conversations around the rapid changes brought by artificial intelligence, as per an internal memo from Fidji Simo.
OpenAI confirmed that despite the acquisition, TBPN will continue to operate with full editorial independence. The show will retain control over its programming, guest selection, editorial decisions, and production schedule. However, it will now report to Chris Lehane and is also expected to support OpenAI’s broader communications and marketing efforts beyond its regular content.
In the memo, Simo praised TBPN’s understanding of the evolving tech landscape and its ability to help brands market effectively online. She noted that the show’s strong awareness of industry trends and innovative communication strategies played a key role in the decision to acquire it.
TBPN is known for its real-time analysis of technology news and interviews with top executives, competing with major financial media outlets like Bloomberg and CNBC. Under OpenAI’s ownership, the show is expected to gradually wind down its advertising business, which previously included live-read commercials by cofounders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, often delivered in a distinctive style featuring sponsor-branded racing jackets.
Launched in October 2024, TBPN quickly grew into a profitable venture. By March 2025, it had started running three-hour weekday livestreams and built a dedicated audience. The company reportedly generated around $5 million in advertising revenue last year and was projected to exceed $30 million in 2026.
Although its audience size remains relatively modest, averaging about 70,000 viewers per episode across platforms, TBPN has gained strong popularity among Silicon Valley executives. Many in the tech industry view it as more aligned with and supportive of innovation compared to traditional media outlets. The show has hosted prominent guests such as Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Sam Altman, further boosting its influence in the tech community.
