BIRAC Fuels Biotech Revolution: ₹4,200 Crore Funding Empowering 15 Lakh Innovators and Startups
Marking its 14th Foundation Day, the Biotechnology Industry
Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) has revealed a staggering growth trajectory
for India’s biotech ecosystem. Since its inception, the public sector
enterprise under the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has enabled over ₹4,200
crore in funding support, directly benefiting more than 15 lakh
startups, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
This milestone highlights BIRAC’s role as the primary
architect of India’s biotech revolution, transforming a once-fragmented sector
into a globally competitive powerhouse.
A Decade of Exponential Growth
Speaking at the event, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh
noted that the number of biotech startups in India has skyrocketed from just 50
in 2014 to over 11,000 in 2026. This expansion has fueled a massive leap
in the national bioeconomy:
- 2014:
$10 Billion
- 2024:
$165.7 Billion
- 2025:
$195.3 Billion (18% YoY growth)
- 2030
Target: $300 Billion
Launch of the ₹2,000 Crore BIRAC–RDI Fund
To maintain this momentum, the government officially opened
the first national call for the ₹2,000 crore BIRAC–RDI Fund. Part of a
larger ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development, and Innovation (RDI) initiative,
this fund is specifically designed to bridge the "valley of death"
between laboratory prototypes and industrial-scale manufacturing.
The fund will provide patient capital through equity,
long-term debt, and convertible instruments for projects between Technology
Readiness Levels (TRL) 4 and 9. This ensures that high-risk, deep-tech
innovations in biopharma, agri-biotech, and blue economy can scale without the
immediate pressure of traditional venture capital.
Infrastructure and Incubation Excellence
BIRAC’s impact extends beyond direct capital. Under its BioNEST
programme, the council now supports:
- 100
Bio-incubators across India.
- 10.45
Lakh Square Feet of dedicated incubation space.
- Access
to high-end instrumentation, regulatory guidance, and IP support.
Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of DBT and Chairman of
BIRAC, emphasized that the organization has helped develop over 900 products
and created 35,000 high-skilled jobs, proving that India can generate
globally competitive science from within its own borders.
Future Outlook: BioE3 and Beyond
The recently approved BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for
Economy, Environment, and Employment) remains a cornerstone of this growth. By
focusing on sustainable biomanufacturing and "Bio-foundries," India
aims to lead the next industrial revolution—one powered by biology and artificial
intelligence rather than fossil fuels.
