As part of its AI effort, Google plans to construct new subsea cables from India

Google on Wednesday announced plans to build new subsea cable networks from its upcoming AI infrastructure hub in India and other global locations, as New Delhi hosts a major artificial intelligence summit drawing global technology leaders and policymakers.

The move comes amid intensifying competition among tech giants to expand AI infrastructure and connectivity in India. The company had earlier committed to invest $15 billion over five years to build its largest AI infrastructure hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, a port city in Andhra Pradesh.

Google said it will establish three new subsea cable routes connecting India with Singapore, South Africa, and Australia. The plan includes a direct cable link between Visakhapatnam and South Africa, another between Visakhapatnam and Singapore, and a separate connection linking Mumbai with Western Australia.

The company also announced four strategic fiber-optic routes designed to strengthen network resilience and capacity between the United States, India, and multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere. These projects are part of a broader regional collaboration initiative called America–India Connect, aimed at creating a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam.

According to Google, the new infrastructure will diversify India’s international connectivity beyond existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai, improving redundancy, digital resilience, and economic security for the country’s internet backbone.

Separately, Nvidia said it is partnering with three Indian cloud providers to supply advanced processors for AI-focused data centres that will train and run large AI models.

Commenting on India’s AI outlook, Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google’s parent Alphabet, said India is uniquely positioned for rapid AI growth and remains one of the largest markets for the company’s Gemini AI chatbot. He said Google aims to be a long-term partner in India’s AI expansion as the country scales infrastructure and innovation capacity.
