After an AI-generated image was used to impersonate a delivery, DoorDash terminated the driver's account

DoorDash Bans Rider After AI-Generated Image Used to Fake Delivery

Delivery platform DoorDash has banned a rider after an investigation found that an artificial intelligence–generated image was used to falsely mark a food order as delivered, according to a report by TechCrunch on Sunday.

The action followed multiple incidents in Austin, Texas, including one shared publicly by technology and finance author Byrne Hobart on social media platform X on December 29. Hobart said his DoorDash order was marked “Delivered” in the app and was accompanied by a photo that appeared to show the front entrance of his home. However, he said no delivery driver was present and the food was nowhere to be found.

After Hobart contacted customer support, DoorDash issued a refund and account credit and sent a replacement order. The second delivery arrived within the original estimated delivery time. Hobart later posted details of the incident online, triggering a wider discussion among Austin residents.

Following his post, another user with the handle @Dave claimed to have experienced a similar issue involving a driver using the same display name. There is no confirmed link between the two cases, and no independent verification that the incidents were connected.

Online users speculated that the driver’s account may have been compromised and used to falsely complete deliveries, potentially by spoofing GPS location data and submitting images through unconventional methods. Under normal circumstances, the DoorDash driver app requires drivers to capture a live photo at drop-off, rather than upload an existing image.

Hobart suggested that such a workaround might be possible under certain conditions, such as poor network connectivity or the use of modified devices. Some users also pointed out that DoorDash retains photos from previous successful deliveries to the same address, which could explain how an image closely resembling a customer’s front door appeared without a new photo being taken.

In a statement to TechCrunch, a DoorDash spokesperson said the company promptly investigated the incident, permanently deactivated the driver’s account, and ensured the affected customer was fully compensated. The spokesperson added that DoorDash has a zero-tolerance policy for fraud and uses a combination of automated systems and human reviews to detect and prevent misuse of its platform.

The incident has renewed concerns about how AI-generated content could be misused in gig economy platforms and the safeguards required to prevent fraud as such technologies become more accessible.
