Additional third-party models and prompt-based video editing are now supported by Adobe Firefly
Adobe has announced a major update to its AI video-generation app, Firefly, introducing a powerful new video editor that allows users to make precise, prompt-based edits without recreating entire clips. The update also expands Firefly’s ecosystem with new third-party image and video generation models, including Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 and Topaz Labs’ Astra.
Previously, Firefly only supported full prompt-based video generation, forcing users to regenerate videos if any element needed adjustment. With the new editor, users can now edit specific video elements using text prompts, such as modifying colors, changing camera angles, or altering visual details. A new timeline interface also enables frame-by-frame adjustments, audio edits, and fine-tuning of other characteristics.
Adobe first announced the editor in a private beta in October and has now begun rolling it out to all Firefly users.
The update integrates Runway’s Aleph model, allowing users to issue highly specific instructions like “Change the sky to overcast and lower the contrast” or “Zoom in slightly on the main subject.” Adobe’s proprietary Firefly Video model now supports advanced workflows, including uploading a start frame and a reference camera-motion video to replicate the same angle and movement in generated footage.
In addition, Firefly now supports Topaz Labs’ Astra model, enabling video upscaling to 1080p and 4K resolution. Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 image generation model is also being added to Firefly across platforms, with availability for Adobe Express users beginning in January. Adobe is also introducing collaborative boards to support shared creative workflows.
The company said these updates are part of a broader effort to increase engagement with Firefly as competition intensifies in AI-powered image and video generation. To encourage adoption, Adobe is offering unlimited generations from all image models and the Adobe Firefly Video model until January 15 for subscribers on Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium, and high-credit plans.
Adobe has significantly expanded Firefly throughout the year. In February, it launched tiered subscriptions for image and video generation, followed by a redesigned Firefly web app, mobile applications, and expanded third-party model support.
With this latest update, Adobe is positioning Firefly as a more flexible, professional-grade AI creative platform amid rapid innovation across the generative AI landscape.
